Midnight Special is a traditional blues song made famous by Lead Belly in 1934. It's about a train whose light is seen as salvation by prisoners watching it pass by night after night, out of reach. There was a superstition developed among the prisoners that if you were in the light of that train you would gain freedom, and be blessed with good fortune.
Everyone's welcome at The Midnight Special, and the spirit of that song was everything we hoped the bar would be—a space where people can gather to listen to music, chat, drink, eat and shine a bit of light on each other.
The Midnight Special was inspired by our favourite dive bars in the US—places that always put good music and good vibes first. We wanted to make sure we always had fine drinks to match. We create a new range of signature cocktails twice a year with those ideas in mind: something for everyone that tastes as good as music makes you feel.
Lulu's is taking over The Midnight Special's kitchen for a strictly limited time, dishing up flavour-packed 'food with a conscience'. Owner/chef Monica Luppi will be offering California style tamales, steamed parcels of corn masa dough filled with meat or vegetables served with fresh salsas, as well as a rotating list of sandwich and snack specials.
Nash, Sylvie and Cristian traveled through America in 2008 together. On their journey through New York, San Francisco, Memphis and Los Angeles they visited many a great neighbourhood bar, and saw lots of live music. This started the conversation about how great it would be to have bars like these back in our hometown, Sydney. We discovered that the liquor license laws had recently changed and this is when we chatted about the real possibility of bringing a venue to Sydney that is reminiscent of the bars we went to in the States.
Midnight Special is the title of the traditional blues song that Lead Belly made famous and the name we bestowed on the bar. The vision was to create a space where people can gather to listen to music, chat, drink and eat. The music you will hear is predominantly Blues and Rock n Roll. Having spent the majority of their youths in Newtown, they decided this was the perfect place for The Midnight Special to exist, and in early 2012 the front door opened.
